Classification of luminaires

All luminaires should be classified according to the protection they provide against electric shock. The labeling is divided into classes I, II and III and indicates the type of insulation protection products have.

IEC 60598 sets the regulations for luminaires. A fixture may only be labeled with one class. This means, for example, that a low-voltage luminaire with built-in transformer and grounded 230V cable will be labeled Class I.

Class I

If a luminaire have Class I, that means it is only protected by basic insulation, and that conductive touchable parts are also connected to ground. Non-wired luminaires shall have a connection ground for protective ground. This is called Basic insulation.

For fixed-mounted LED-light engines in a Class I luminaire, a creepage distance of 2.5mm and an air gap of 1.5mm is required.

Anders has a crepage distance of 2.5mm and is suitable for Class I fixtures.

For 230VAC luminaires, a voltage rating of 2x230V + 1000V = 1460V, is required.

Class II

Class II luminaires have protection against electrical shock based solely on the basic insulation and an additional safety measure, such as double insulation or reinforced insulation. They may be connected to grounded outlet with European connector. This is called Reinforced Insulation.

For fixed-mounted LED modules in a Class II luminaire, a crepage distance of 5mm and aperture of 3mm applies.

Gustav has a crepage distance of 5mm and is suitable for Class II fixtures.

AC LED-light engines with only 2.5mm crepage distance on the PCB can be provided with insulating pads underneath which extend beyond 2.5mm outside thus gives the LED engine a 5mm crepage distance. In those cases, the PCB must be fitted with insulated nylon screws.

For 230V luminaires with class II,  a voltage rating of 4x230V + 2750V = 3670V is required.

Class II luminaires must be designed so that no electrified parts can be touched.

Class III

Class III luminaire are fed from an external transformer. The protection against electric shock is based on feeding with Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV) from a protection transformer max 50V AC or 120V DC. The luminaire may not generate higher voltage.
